This team also works directly with students and their families to support them not only in school but out of school as well.
Our district also supports at a division level the development of skills of students and the understanding that at times students may require specialized help with assistive technology, the ability to access a Behaviour Lead Teacher, as well as the access to an Early Education Lead Teacher to better support your child and your child’s teacher in the learning environment.
On My Way Program
As a designated PUF (Program Unit Funding) site, at Vera M. Welsh, the On My Way Program offers programming for pre-school aged children starting at 2 years 6 months, with severe delays.
In On My Way! we engage students in a developmentally appropriate setting through play, books, music and games. We use one on one sessions, small group and whole group activities in an established routine. Students will learn social skills like sharing, taking turns and how to play together. Fun learning is the goal for every day!
Our program is based on the children’s interests and goals. We work collaboratively with professionals such as, Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Physio Therapists to create developmentally appropriate programming that meets each individual child’s needs. They will learn through play and other activities such as songs, games, crafts, and anything that will stimulate the use of authentic language. We focus on enhancing the children’s speech and language and academic readiness by teaching skills in a play-based environment while using developmentally appropriate programming:
Physical Skills and Well-Being
Language and Communication
These skills will be acquired through play and interactions with adults, some examples are:
Student Advocacy Counselor
Our Student Advocacy Counselor works with the principal, teachers and parents to ensure that each child is provided the best possible learning and social environment.
The Student Advocacy Counselor, along with other specialists from the School Division, work to provide information about children and how they learn. With this information, school is better able to adjust the child's program.
Through preventative programs offered to each grade level, the emphasis is placed on practical personal development skills for the students.
The Student Advocacy Counselor also talks with children who seem to be having difficulty adjusting to some aspect of their environment. This may involve meeting with the parents, teachers or other concerned individuals in an effort to help the child.
If you have any particular concerns regarding your child, please feel free to contact our counselor or family outreach worker at 623-4672.
