Vera M. Welsh selected for school nutrition pilot program
Northern LIghts Public Schools would like to thank the Government of Alberta for selecting Vera M. Welsh Elementary School to participate in its "Future Ready" school nutrition pilot program.
Since November 1, Northern Lights has been serving a nutritious lunch to 350 students at the K to 3 school in Lac La Biche. The food is prepared by students at J.A. Williams High School, providing them with valuable hands-on work experience in the culinary arts, then transported to Vera M. Welsh and served to students. The cost of the pilot program is being covered by a grant from Alberta Education. Northern Lights was one of 14 boards throughout the province selected to participate.
"We are so pleased to be able to offer students at Vera the opportunity to have a nutritious lunch at school every day," said Board Chair Mandi Skogen. "There are so many benefits to providing students with healthy food including improved student achievement and behaviour. Shared meals also help build a sense of community in schools and, in this case, there is the added benefit of building a relationship between our elementary and high school while providing our high school students with learning opportunities as well."
The lunch program at Vera also aligns with the Health and Wellness goal the Division set in its 2015-2018 Three-Year Education Plan.
